File for Your Exemptions. It’s Easy as 1-2-3.

Homestead Exemptions

Here are some criteria to see if you qualify and steps to take if you want to file for a HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION.

STEP ONE: ARE YOU ELIGIBLE?

Determine if you are eligible. Not everyone is eligible, here are the basic criteria.

  • You must have owned the property as of January 1.
  • You must OCCUPY/LIVE in the home.
  • The home must be considered your PRIMARY residence.
  • Only one home you own (in Georgia or ANYWHERE, USA) can be eligible for a Homestead Exemption.

STEP TWO: GET YOUR ELEMENTS TOGETHER.

The documentation can be different for your county or city, so make sure to check thoroughly by visiting the links listed below! Here’s the short list.

  • Homeowner’s name
  • Property address
  • Property’s parcel ID
  • Proof of residency, such as a copy of valid Georgia driver’s license and a copy of vehicle registration
  • Recorded deed for new owners if county records have not been updated
  • Trust document and affidavit, if the property is in a trust.

STEP THREE: TIME TO FILE.

Your homestead exemption application must be filed with your county tax officials by APRIL 1ST. Again, check out the links below for your specific details.

The good news is that once approved, the majority of homestead exemptions will be automatically renewed each year as long as you continue to live in and own your home!
